This song is a bit of a departure for me. For one thing, the accompaniment is bass, which I haven't done since the 90s, and even then it was a very rare occasion. Not my thing, even though bass was my first instrument. As a vocalist, when I write, I usually reach for, and find what I want, with rhythm guitar. But not with this song. All I heard was bass.
"Songwriting" for all of my songs begins with the first lyric and melody verse just springing up on me, using me to write itself. And it either continues on its own (rare), or I help it along (more common), or I lose interest (most common). And I do guitar for it. But this song wanted bass. And it wrote itself all on its own in my head on a 45 min walk one day February 2021. All lyrics/melody and bass parts.
I don't even really know what it's about. Like when you have a dream, and you wake up with, "Where did that come from?" Kind of the interplay between artist, writer, muse, audience, and ideas. Maybe it's about needing more control over something and at the same time surrendering to that lack of control. Or I am just tripping out about the songwriting process, trying to tame and surrender to the "it."
But I think it's a cool song, and the lyrics are invitingly open to interpretation. And my bass groove is pretty solid, if I do say so myself. I sure had fun with the "Aurora" "Frozen II" like backing vocals in the chorus.
And... the guitar! That is all Biff Cooper, who really shines on this guitar-wise along with his production and engineering talents. I was completely stumped for guitar, and he brought this all in, and it worked from the get-go. That delay sparkles in the best way. Omg the choruses! Drippy delay deliciousness. I am so happy with how this song came out. I can't wait for everyone to see the video. It's going to be amazing.
